Artist Statement

To me, the entire field of art history is vital to contemporary art. It’s important, when making art to to look at what has been created in the past, and learn to improve or be inspired by what’s been done. When a viewer looks at a piece of art, they immediately look for connections to other things. Often, these connections to life can be mirrored in another artist’s pieces.
My art is similar to the ideas of the Kitsch Movement Artists such as Roberto Ferri and Richard T. Scott, in that I directly reference the “Old Masters.” The difference, though, between my art, and the Kitsch artists is that I use contemporary techniques, such as film and photography, where Kitsch artists use the skills of the Old Masters, such as similar styles of painting.
In my artwork, I focus on trying to create pieces that have clear connections to iconic pieces of art, including well-known artists in history, such as Salvador Dali and Michelangelo Buonarroti, to more contemporary artists, such as Theo Jansen, and Roberto Ferri.
My artwork is a collection of work that I’ve put together that all directly references other works of art. This most accurately defines who I am as an artist, because I feel that past works of art have been the most influential factor in today’s contemporary artwork, and especially in mine.

Mock Gallery Walkthrough from Liz Stewart on Vimeo.

This video is a walk-through of a virtual gallery that I've created. It showcases three of my best video works, which are featured on this blog.

Untitled from Liz Stewart on Vimeo.

This is a video that I created, starring my friend Anna. I wanted to depict the painting, The Mona Lisa, from the eyes of a painter. I specifically wanted to emphasize the idea of painting a live model, because this is something that I struggle with in my own paintings.

This piece, titled A Sunny Afternoon on the Beach with the Strandbeest, is an image of myself edited onto an image of Theo Jansen's Strandbeest.

Persistence of Time from Liz Stewart on Vimeo.

This is my video titled Persistence of Time: A Silent Film. It's a video that depicts the idea of time as a persisting moment. A clock, or a watch, is generally an ever-moving piece, as the hands are always moving. In this video, I chose to keep the hands of the clock still, as the focus, zoom, and lighting changed. Persistence of Time ultimately came together as a piece in the final editing stages. I think that the idea of time, to me, is something that's important, because time is something that none of us ever have enough of, and that we can't control, but this piece did relate to me because in this video, I could control my own time.

T-Rex with his Icecream.

This piece is now re-titled Dinosaur Noms. It simply depicts a dinosaur eating an icecream cone, in his natural jungle habitat. I used Photoshop, to isolate the icecream cone, and take a bite out of it.

Found Object Mark-Making

This piece, pretty much untitled, was used when I found a plastic bottle cap, and reformed the paper with the edges of the cap.
